Flutter of a butterfly
How does a flutter of a butterfly cause a storm thousand miles away? I don’t intend to go into the chaos theory and all the science behind this magnificent concept, instead want to keep it simpler to what we know and see. Old theory but so true when you see the life experiences, truly small things can bring big changes! Abraham Lincoln’s thought of abolishing slavery caught the imagination of many who fought for the cause. Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and the examples go on.
There were many other leaders who possibly aligned to the same cause. But it was the communication and articulation by these leaders, which made a thought into a movement. Be it strategy, idea, emotion, argument or just a feeling, its needs communication for others to understand.
Student Skills
Did you come across brilliant people who have great ideas, great skill and possibly hard facts but they are not able to make their voices heard? Yes we all have! In-fact if you peep into the corporate world you see that the IIT’s, NIT’s, top management institutes churn great talent, but a lot of them are not able to climb the ladder.
Span of Control
The thought of corporate world brings me to an interesting and ever green topic of discussion between managers and employees- PROMOTION! CAREER GROWTH! It’s tough to articulate what career growth is, as there are multiple dimensions to it. My discussions with leaders, top human resource experts and my own experience says- It is simple! All of the complex dimension of career growth can be one single common denominator and that it increasing the span of control. Yes, increasing the span of control in whatever one is doing means career growth and all the other dimensions will automatically growth with increase in span of control.
Interesting thing about span of control is that it can only happen when one can influence others. Now influencing other’s just does not happen by official position of a manager, it’s most powerful when it is driven by thought leadership, trust, belief and initiative. And the most important skill for influencing others is communication.
